Mala
The bead necklace is mainly used to count mantras that are repeated, similar to the rosary. With the beads of the mala, often made of semi-precious stones, pearls, bodhi seeds or wood, all sorts of things can be counted, mantras, prayers, circumambulations, prostrations and the like. The cord should consist of nine threads, symbolizing the Buddha Vajradhara and the eight bodhisattvas. The larger pearl at the end represents wisdom and the realization of emptiness, the cylindrical pearl on the large pearl symbolizes emptiness itself. Together they symbolize triumph over all odds.
The 108 bead mala is used when reciting or chanting mantras. It is important to keep the thoughts pure while reciting mantras or chanting them. The mantra is a practical tool for awakening the inner forces that can support our progress. A great effect is achieved by repeating the mantra over and over again. It deepens the longer or more often you continue the recitation. The sound produced when reciting is not insignificant. This sound has a spiritual effect on the reciter. It is said that a mantra is equal to a human life. There are various phases that must be passed through before the final result is achieved: "purification of mental impressions". There are various mantras with an inherent potential power. These are personally transmitted by the Master at initiation. These are the so-called "Siddha Mantras". Some malas have two counting devices with images of vajra and bell. In Buddhism, these images symbolize “method and wisdom, the male and female principles.” An animal bone symbolizes the transience of all beings. A counting device on the mala makes it possible to count up to 100,000.
