The Damaru ritual drum
A damaru is traditionally used during Hindu and Buddhist pujas and other prayer ceremonies and meditations. Played slowly and methodically, the sound of the Damaru accompanies the haunting melodies and chants of the Chöd ritual, accompaniment for meditation and visualization that are at the heart of this spiritual practice. A large chod drum is usually used, but a damaru can also be used.

Symbolism of Damaru
The sound of the damaru is considered a symbol of emptiness or shunyata. The two drums joined together represent relative and absolute bodhicitta. The form of the Damaru has its roots in ancient India, where one side of the drum represents the male energy of method and the other the female creative energy of wisdom.

In Tantric Buddhist rituals, the Damaru leads through meditation and reminds us of the transience of all appearances, while the sound invokes the female deities, the Dakinis. Another interpretation of the Damaru sound suggests that the drum represents the forces of the rhythm of the heartbeat.

In Hinduism, especially by Shiva devotees, it is believed that Shiva's striking of the Damaru produced the very first sound (Nada). This first sound therefore arose in the emptiness of nothingness. Shiva began his dance of creation to the rhythm of the Damaru. The world emerged from his dance.
