The Inca Cross or Chakana Talisman
In Inca mythology, the Chakana symbol is believed to have a mathematical and geometric meaning and it holds the key to understanding the mystery of life. The cross was of great meaning and importance to the Quechua people. Traditionally, the Chakana (or in Spanish: cruz cuadrada, four-sided cross) represents the Southern Cross constellation, which can be seen when looking at the sky from the southern hemisphere. According to the ancient Andean culture, the center of the universe is located there, which was easy to find if you knew it and looked at the 4 stars Alpha, Beta, Gama and Delta, which formed the so-called Andean cross.
Each star is located at a cardinal point and represents a region: Chichansuyo-North, Kollasuyo-South, Kuntisuyo-East, Antisuyo-West, which also symbolize the elements of water, earth, fire and air.
When used as a meditation tool, the chakana can promote mental balance and deeper understanding across the many levels of consciousness. The hole in the center of the cross (absolute space) is the axis intersection and at the same time the channel through which the consciousness of a shaman reaches the other levels of cosmic existence.
